Refugee sponsor groups are volunteer teams that raise funds and commit to support refugees for their first year in Canada.
Sponsor groups often form through neighborhoods, family ties or faith communities. Given AURA’s governance, we strive to link community-based groups with a local Anglican church.
AURA helps all our groups navigate the sponsorship process. Once a group secures funding, AURA submits the official application. We then support the sponsor group through the newcomer’s arrival and resettlement.
Over 32 million are refugees in need of protection today, and with rising global number of refugees, we encourage the formation of new Toronto region sponsor groups which will allow AURA to resettle more refugees.

Sponsors are responsible for supporting sponsored newcomers for one year from the day they arrive in Canada. This includes:
- Providing the cost of food, rent and household utilities and other day-to-day living expenses,
- Providing clothing, furniture and household goods,
- Locating interpreters,
- Identifying and helping access a family physician and dentist,
- Assisting with registration for identification documents, benefits, programs, etc.,
- Enrolling children in school and adults in English classes,
- Introducing newcomers to the community and helping them feel at home,
- Providing orientation to daily activities like banking, transportation, shopping, etc.,
- Helping in the search for employment.
